Bampton Community First Responders

A defibrillator is installed on the north facing (car park) wall of the Post Office - usable by any member of the public.
Instructions
The defibrillator is registered with the ambulance service who will also be able to advise on first aid.
Always call 999 for an ambulance in a medical emergency!
WHAT ARE FIRST RESPONDERS?

In a medical emergency such as cardiac arrest, choking/breathing difficulties or other life-threatening situation, our first thought is to dial 999. Bampton is a rural area, it can take time for the ambulance to arrive.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE IN THE EVENT OF A MEDICAL EMERGENCY

If a series of events takes place in a set sequence, a cardiac arrest victim has a greater chance of survival. These events are known as the 'Chain of Survival'. When put into practice by increasing public awareness, training in basic life support and community based defibrillators, these events have improved the pre-hospital survival rate by as much as 30%. Here is the Chain:
  1. Early Recognition and Call for Help, summoning an ambulance if necessary.
  2. CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation)
  3. Defibrillation
  4. Advanced Life Support/Post Resuscitation - ambulance care and swift transfer to hospital.
North West Ambulance (NWAS) has set up a scheme to create teams of specially trained local people who have volunteered to become Community First Responders

COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS CAN AND DO SAVE LIVES

A 999 call goes to NWAS who contact by pager the Community First Responders team who quickly attend the accident/incident. CFRs carry a kit of equipment to help save lives - oxygen and a defibrillator. The CFRs and their equipment provide essential treatment in life threatening situations prior to the arrival of the ambulance.

The CFRs are trained and equipped to provide certainly the first three links in the Chain of Survival.

Training and kit for the team of Community First Responders is expensive and has to be purchased by donations to Community First Responders. Kit needs maintaining and supplies of oxygen and other important equipment needs replacing. New volunteers need training as the team grows .
